Udder engorgement associated with dry off causes discomfort to the cow and impacts udder health. BOVIKALC® Dry is an oral mineral supplement that reduces milk production, promotes cow welfare and supports udder health while setting the stage for the next lactation.
How BOVIKALC® Dry works
When BOVIKALC® Dry is administered to cows, it causes a temporary decrease in blood pH, which leads to a reduction in milk production. This reduction can be attributed to two main pathways:
1. A decrease in glucose transport to the alveolar cells impairs lactose synthesis, ultimately reducing milk production.
2. A reduction in appetite results in decreased feed intake, limiting net available energy and contributing to reduced milk production.
To effectively reduce milk production, administer two boluses at the same time, either at the last milking or 8-12 hours prior to it. The BOVIKALC® Dry bolus dissolves within 30 minutes.
